I have a 15-month-old Rottweiler/Shepherd cross. How much time do I need to spend walking him?

This is a very good question. Getting your dog out for a daily walk can help improve not only his physical health, but will also give him the social stimulation and interaction he needs.
The answer can depend on the breed, age and lifestyle of your dog. Knowing your breed’s requirements is your first step; very active dogs such as Border Collies simply can’t be worn out with a couple of trips around the block. Your dog should be able to manage a brisk 45-minute walk at least once a day with a couple of additional shorter walks to stretch his legs. This is a minimum requirement and if he is in good shape, and you are able to keep up, the pair of you should be able to enjoy long hikes together.
If your dog has not been physically active, it is wise to start on a fitness plan slowly, and work up to extended walks. Also, be careful when exercising a young puppy, especially a large breed. Your veterinarian can advise you.
Keep an eye on his weight. Rottweillers and Shepherds can have hip problems, so it is always a good idea to speak to your veterinarian prior to starting any fitness program. One last tip, make sure to protect the pads of your dogs paws in the winter. Boots and paw protective cream can help combat those icy, salty paths.
