MAPLE BANANA FLAX PUPSICLESJuly is a month to celebrate all that is Canadian, and when it comes to food, maple syrup is most associated with our country’s cuisine. Of course, dogs love the stuff as much as humans do. When the temperature rises and you don’t want to turn on the oven, these frozen treats will help your pet cool down – and you might even enjoy one yourself! The yogourt adds protein and calcium to help keep bones and teeth healthy and strong; bananas contribute vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fibre; and the maple syrup is just there to taste good. Don’t use too much – like any sugar, large doses of maple syrup isn’t good for canine teeth, and flavour-wise, a little goes a long way. If you’re out of maple syrup, use honey.
DIRECTIONS1. Stir together the yogourt, bananas, flaxseed and syrup and freeze in containers appropriate for the size of your dog – muffin tins, mini muffin tins, ice cube trays and even yogourt containers for larger dogs work well. Fill them not quite full, keeping in mind that the mixture will swell as it freezes. 2. To release them from the pan or containers, dip the bottoms in warm water. |
