Please Support Bill 222

by Kelly on February 2, 2010

We’ve previously reported about MPP Cheri DiNovo’s efforts to bring some common sense back to dangerous dog legislation in Ontario.

DiNovo’s Bill 222 seeks to repeal provisions in the Dog Owners’ Liability Act that prohibit restricted pit bulls and provide for controls on pit bulls. In other words, it addresses the breed-specific aspects of the poorly-crafted legislation more commonly referred to as DOLA. The Bill also seeks to repeal provisions in the Animals for Research Act that relate to the disposition of pit bulls under that Act. You can read the bill here.

How can you get involved? Here’s one very simple way: use this site to send letters of support to your MPP, Dalton McGuinty and Cheri DiNova. By typing information into a few fields and hitting ’send’, you’ll automatically send letters to your elected politicians, asking them to support Bill 222 and advising them of your opposition to breed-specific legislation.

The process will take you less than five minutes. Hearing from your elected MPP? That might take a bit longer. Mine hasn’t even bothered to respond.

to Constance Puterman,

The American Pit Bull Terrier is a pure breed. It was first registered in 1895 with the founding of the United Kennel Club and then in the early 1900’s by the American Dog Breeder’s Association. The American Kennel Club then recognized the breed in 1932 but did not like it’s original name and re-named it the Staffordshire terrier and 40 years later changed the name to American Staffordshire terrier. The Canadian Kennel Club follows mostly American Kennels Club standards thus only recognized the American Staffordshire Terrier.

Isn’t Cheri a politician?

I emailed my MPP John Yakabuski and was disappointed to find out that his office strongly supports the anti pit bull legislation. His office also wrote to tell me that they support this bill because it protects ontario residents…I don’t feel any more protected. I just feel let down by my MPP.

A Pit Bull is a mixed breed of dog and cannot be registered through the CKC, (Canadian Kennel Club) as of course it is not a purebred. The CKC follows rules and regulations to register breeds.
I know, and have heard of people breeding dogs of different breeds and who don’t have a clue of what they are doing therefore the end result is uncontrolled dog population many times abandoned dogs and of course aggressive dogs, (small medium and large breeds). This is not the dogs fault but the breeders who are not registered.
I strongly believe we should inform people and make them responsible for their actions as dogs are not to blame. I don’t believe anyone should be allowed to breed dogs; it should be left up to the CKC. If people can’t afford to purchase a dog from a registered kennel then maybe they should reconsider getting a dog at all.
In conclusion I believe a bill should be fairly passed to state that no one without being registered through the CKC should be allowed to breed any dog of any type.
The dogs that are in existence should be temperament tested (the non registered breeds), that is to say all mixed breeds should temperament tested and it should be mandatory that owners go through a dog training course and should pass. I believe this would be fair for everyone. If the dog does not pass the temperament test then it should be considered to be put down. More guidelines to owners and potential owners should have more restrictions and obligations. There should be a law passed for non registered people who breed dogs or potential dog breeders.

Thank you for listening,

Connie

When the Bill passed first reading, Dalton had no plans of supporting it:

Kelley the above article was posted by me on another blog for the same purpose that your blog is promoting Cheri DiNova’s bill.

L-Girl I am pleased we are friends again.Let me suggest something.1stly I am not blaming anyone but there are 3 areas that this law will never be defeated without change of government,Miami-Dade County,Denver Colorada,Ontario Canada, the 1st 2 because they have had the law in for 20 years plus and it would be political suicide to admit they Murdered 1000’s upon 1000’s of family pets and they were wrong. In Ontario’s case Mçguinty who has through the media spread the FEAR syndrome has lost 2 of his advisors/allies Michael Bryant who should be up on Murder charges for killing a cyclist in cold blood
(the mastermind of bsl in Ontario)purely for furthering his political ambitions at the time, and Tom Skeldon the Dog-Warden of Lucas County who at last has been FIRED for excessive force murdering puppies and any 4 legged
family-pet that walked. So Mçguinty is out in the cold,an embarrassment to the Fiberals,he will fight tooth and nail to keep this Heinous and Evil Law in place.
Remember most politicos have only 2 interests “GREED and POWER” smarock10@yahoo.com

I haven’t heard anything about him supporting the Bill. I’d be surprised if he did.
