Punish the deed, not the breed

by Alison on November 19, 2009

doglegislation_dogYesterday I attended a rally at Queen’s Park in Toronto. Members of the Dog Legislation Council of Canada and other bully lovers were on hand to support MPP Cheri DiNovo, who was introducing a Private Member’s Bill that would amend the breed specific part of Ontario’s Dog Owner’s Liability Act.

I cannot begin to express what these people are going through. The cause against BSL has had so many heartbreaking moments, the latest being the Supreme Court denying them the chance to make their case there.

I keep trying to comprehend the fear these people live in. They live with the knowledge that their dogs can and will be taken away if they slip up for even a second. Last night I watched my dog sleep peacefully on the couch and thought about how lucky I was that this bill does not directly affect us. Yet.

These people are fighting so hard. They win over supporters based on the fact that so much evidence and expert opinion is on their side of the argument. But they need help. They need the support of every person who has ever allowed a canine into his or her heart. Responsible dog owners need to stand up and say that if you attack one of us, you attack us all.

MPP DiNovo’s Bill is a Private Member’s Bill, and I have been told many times over the last week that those hardly ever pass. That means she needs us, the dog loving public to step up and help. Join the DLCC. Tell your CKC rep what an important issue this is to you. Write a letter to your MPP, let he or she know that your dog votes!

We as dog lovers, all know that a dog is made aggressive by it’s owner.I have a black lab.She is gentle even with kittens, and towards every living creature.
How ever there are people who take a dog in house for the wrong reason.A dog does not need to be trained to attack it will always remain loyal to it’s caretaker.People who make their dogs aggressive should be given a severe punishment not the dog.The dog can be rehabilitated
