At this year’s Woofstock festival, I spent a bit of time with Canadian figure-skating legend, Kurt Browning. Kurt was on hand to lend his support for the Pedigree Adoption Drive Campaign, an initiative that has raised over half a million dollars for shelters across Canada since its inception in 2008. With such an enthusiastic spokesperson, one can only hope that Canadians will become more aware of the reality of dogs in Canadian shelters.
You can watch this video of my interview with Kurt Browning to hear what he has to say about the adoption drive.
Are you interested in doing something to help shelter dogs? As simple as it may sound, the key is simply to just do something.
The makers of Pedigree commissioned a survey to gauge Canadians’ perceptions of shelter dogs and the findings revealed that Canadians underestimate the amount of dogs living in shelters, with only two per cent of respondents able to accurately estimate the number of dogs waiting to be adopted.
Recent statistics indicate the number of dogs admitted into shelters over the course of the year is more than 36,000. And while a whopping 49 per cent of respondents say not enough is being done to raise awareness about shelters, 81 per cent admit they are not currently helping shelters.
